Jack...
Jack joined our pack about 4 yrs. ago -- he may have been
the most laid-back, gentlest, kindest being to have ever walked the
earth. Plagued with years of untreated ear infections, he was
completely deaf...always failing the "potato
chip bag test" (had he been able to hear the bag open, he'd be
front and center, expecting a sample). Jack could sniff out a bread
crumb from a mile away, and soon figured a way to get up on both
the kitchen table AND the kitchen counter, in search of food. The ol'
boy was totally food motivated.
Almost two years ago, he passed the evaluation to become
a registered therapy dog. It took four attempts, but with our good
friend Nina's help, he finally passed. I think it was the combination
of being deaf, having severe
separation anxiety,
and being in unfamiliar territory, he just didn't want to do the sit and
stay portion of the evaluation. He saw me walking away, and wasn't
about to "stay" and let me out of his sight. I threatened to Velcro his
butt to the floor, but fortunately, we didn't have to resort to that.
Jack loved visiting patients at
Madigan Army Medical Center, and also got to visit the nurses for
Nurses Week, during his last week of life. He brought joy to many, but
not as much as he brought to me.
Dr. Gintz helped ease Jack over the Rainbow Bridge around 7:30 p.m. last night, as I held him in my arms. Although it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, Jack told me it was time, and gave me permission to let him go. I feel honored to have been a part of his life, and will always love my ol' BlackJack. I only wish we could have spent his earlier years together, but will certainly cherish the time we had. None of us get to live forever, but if anyone deserved to, it would be Jack. THANKS again to everyone for your thoughts, prayers, phone calls, text messages, and support during this time. I will fell asleep on this rainy night in tears, but comforted by knowing Jack is in a better, pain-free place. And, I will miss him sleeping closely next to me every night -- tighter than a tick on a coonhound's back. Good night, Jack -- I LOVE YOU! Terri
I'm very proud to say that ACSR has successfully re-homed more than 75 cocker spaniels in 2008 (that's almost 1-1/2 a week, or more than 6 a month!).
IN MEMORIUM: This year we also lost Max, "the
little black cocker" who passed away this month due to cancer. And,
sadly, we lost Harley's adopted "Dad" -- Doug. Harley was a great
comfort to Doug in his final days, and laid by his side as Doug passed
away at home. Doug's eldest son has adopted Harley, and he and his
wife are now enjoying his company. Both Doug and Max will be missed
dearly.
In closing, I want to thank everyone for a very successful 2008, and
to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year -- I appreciate you!
Terri
